Plastic Islands

„In sea is six times as much plastic than plankton.“

Because of the masses of plastic, plastic islands occur in the oceans. Worldwide you can find about five plastic islands which are about 700.000 km² to 15.000.000 km².

The problem is that plastic is resistant against natural decomposition. Like this it can be retained up to 500 years which makes it probable that it gets into the sea through wind and rivers.

So everyone who uses plastic is a potential contaminator of the sea.

The consequences are that lots of animals die because they eat the plastic. Especially turtles and seabirds are affected. Another problem is that especially seals and sea lions get strangulated by plastic ropes.
